What Should You Do If You've Just Been in a Car Accident?
- Be Safe: If your vehicle is still moving, make sure to come to a complete stop in a safe area. Once it is safe to exist your vehicle, do so safely and quickly. Do NOT stand with your vehicle. Make sure you are at least 50 feet from the roadway.
- Get Help: Call 911 and remain calm. Explain that you need police and an ambulance if necessary.
- Get Informed: Identify the other driver(s), and their vehicle information. Make sure to get the driver(s)' name, address, telephone number, insurance information including: company name, agent's name, and policy number. For their vehicle info get the: make, model, year, and the registered owner's name. Ask the occupants about any injuries or pain they are feeling. Document all of this with your phone's camera.
- Get Witnesses: Don't be shy and get the names, addresses, and phone numbers for all witnesses on the scene. Most witnesses will leave once they know police and/or paramedics are on their way. Make sure to get their info before they leave.
- Location Information: Note the date and exact time of the accident. Make note of the cross streets, amount of lanes, and any lights or other traffic signs.
- Other Details: Note down the weather, and take pictures of the accident scene and conditions.
- Keep Quiet: All of the information you gather is for you and your case. Do not share this information with anyone besides your attorney. Do not make any comments about what you think caused the accident. Just stay quiet and gather the information.
- Stay On Scene: First responders may take a while to get there. Do NOT leave the scene until they have arrived.
- Get Checked: If you are not taken from the accident scene in an ambulance, go to the hospital or your physician immediately and get checked out. Do not downplay any pain and/or injuries. Even if you feel fine, GET CHECKED OUT BY A DOCTOR. Let the treating physician know you've been in an accident. Let them know of any pain or discomfort, not matter how small.

- Make a Report: Report the accident to your insurance company immediately after contacting your attorney.
What Types of Compensation Am I Entitled to After an Auto Accident?
Vehicle Damage
Naturally, the costs for either replacing or repairing your vehicle post-accident can be significant. If another driver is to blame for the collision, there's no reason for you to bear these expenses.
Medical Bills
Any expenses related to medical treatments for your injuries should be covered by the responsible party. This includes costs for emergency services, hospital stays, medications, and additional treatments that are reflected in your medical bill.
Lost Wages
Should you receive disability pay as a result of a car accident, it's still possible to seek compensation for any lost earnings due to the incident from the at-fault driver.
Pain and Suffering
This type of compensation acknowledges the profound impact an accident can have beyond mere medical expenses and lost wages, offering financial relief that reflects the severity of the suffering experienced.
Loss of Enjoyment of Life
This compensation covers the loss of ability to enjoy daily activities and pleasures, helping to mitigate the profound effects of permanent injuries or long-term disabilities on one’s overall well-being.
Emotional Distress
This form of compensation acknowledges the significant emotional challenges, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma that can persist long after the physical injuries have healed, offering financial support to aid in the victim's psychological recovery.
Have You Been In An Auto Accident?
Choosing to work with a local and experienced Washington State auto accident lawyer can increase the value of your injury claim by uncovering damages outside the obvious expenses you incur during your recovery.
Whalley Law has the insight to identify potential compensation avenues that might otherwise remain overlooked without the strategic guidance of a skilled attorney.
